As usual, Barbara Wilson-Clay clarifies the situation with her timely words.
I do very much agree with her approach. It is always good to make sure that
you are a part of the team caring for this new baby. The team consists of
the baby, parents, pediatrician, lactation consultant and any other health
professional involved. When the approach is a team oriented one, everyone
respects the other's expert opinion. I have laid out my observations as
Barbara does and found that the peds actuallly want my opinion. If there is
a question of a difference, I try to call the doc and discuss what I have
observed. This has worked really well for me. One group calls me to make
evaluation visits at home prior to any hospitilizations of the breastfeeding
baby for my input into the feeding plan. When my visit is complete, we
consult together. I think that most of us have found this to be a dynamic
way of really making an impact in the baby's well being which is what we are
all about. Ann Anderson, RN,IBCLC, NJ
