A post from Pat re an FTT baby she was called in to see reminded me of one
of my pet peeves. So I thought I'd mention it here. "Vulnerable" or
non-robust babies need a different time frame for checkups than do well
babies. These babies are not well babies (to me). I'll give you an example
(and I hope you don't take this as pedi bashing, but in this case I think
the doc made a bad call). Worked wtih a 36-37 wk gest baby with birthwt of
about 4 lbs 14 oz and he dropped down to 4 lbs 8 oz on hosp d/c. I
recommended he be followed closely and not to wait til the usual 2 wk
checkup. He did gain within the first week to 4lbs12 oz but then the doc
discharged him until the 2 MONTH checkup. This I found amazing, because the
baby was not back to birhtweight, nor even up to 5 lbs yet and was a 36-37
wk baby. What do you folks do in situations like this? Am I being too
cautious in wanting these "vulnerable" babies followed closely for a while?
