One ref I found is Clinical Pediatrics August 1990. It found that BF
infants(outside of the immediate newborn period) who are failing to thrive
need to be evaluated for underlying illness. Illness was associated with
one case in five overall, but if infant was over 1 month of age, illness
acoounted for 50% of FTT. CBC, UA and urine culture advised for all
infants who were FTT. The article also mentions how most of the exam for
FTT focuses on the mom and the milk supply, or infant and suck/milk
transfer and not enough babies get a basic exam to rule out illness. This
study is discussed in the 5th ed of Lawrence.
another ref is The Lancet, July 7, 1990, p.50. There is a discussion
about BF and UTI. Infants presented with one or more of the following:
FTT, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. The data suggests a protective effect
of BF vs UTI.
Hope this helps. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
