Dear Fellow Lacnetters,
My first post....after many months of reading and learning. I am a hospital
based lactation nurse. I need some suggestions for a fellow nurse who
desperately wants to nurse her second child. Her first experience included
jaundice, phototherapy, supplements, etc and discontinuing breastfeeding
almost immediately.

Mom is completely committed to breastfeeding. She delivered a 9#7oz baby
boy, uncomplicated vaginal birth. Infant nursed well from beginning.
Nursing 12-15 times per day, good output days 1-3, low urine and no stool
day 4, pedi suggested glycerine suppository and supplements. Mom gave
breastmilk (sister is nursing 7 month old) after feedings with syringe.
Weight loss at 4 days 10% with elevated bili...mom refused lab workup.
Probably 15 or so. At two weeks weight only 8#11 oz....mother desperate.
Started reglan two days ago, no improvement yet. Good latch, audible
swallowing, infant not satisfied fussy after feeds, rooting etc. Infant
being closely followed by doctor. Physician willing to help...need
suggestions.

?hypothyroid? ?hypoprolactinemia? ? ? ?

Graciously,
Laura Burnett RN, CCE
