I usually tell moms that are contemplating breastmilk feeding that that
is certainly an option, but that there are advantages to feeding
directly from the breast, including better development of facial
muscles, better speech, less need for orthodontia, lower risk or TMJ
syndrome, and provision of antibodies in repsonse to infant germs
entering the nipple pores. That last one is usually the convincer for
them to at least let the baby lick or nuzzle. I also recommend that
moms who intend to only pump to allow baby skin to skin or mouth to
breast contact daily to help keep up the supply. (Yeah, I know this is
sneaky...some babies self-attach, and mom becomes "hooked").

When moms confide past sexual abuse I gently suggest that breastfeeding
can be a healing thing, that it is a statement of taking back one's
breasts for their true purpose. I have had clients find this to be
true.
