Sara wrote from the Netherlands, "Just wondering whether the Sears / Lancet
artikel is still doing the rounds
in the media / patient magazines etc. Here in the Netherlands it keeps
rearing it's ugly head. The most recent being an article in a patient
orientated magazine for asthma sufferers (and families). The headline being
"mothersmilk doesn't protect children against allergie and asthma".
Sara - I had a nervous phone call a few months ago from one of my best,
long-standing clients (now breastfeeding fourth baby) asking whether I had
"heard" about an article giving this info. She was really worried. I
explained that it contradicted all the research we have on the protective
effects of BF against allergy/asthma and that there must be something
'wrong' with the study to come up with this really surprising conclusion -
ie this info couldn't possibly be true, and why. Luckily she trusts me
well enough by now to believe me and not what she had just read! But
anyway, Sara, this information is reaching a long way around the world!
