Oh the yes-quite- vexsome topic of what "prescribing" powers an IBCLC has,
the comment is made that "suggesting a patient or a nursing mom follow a
specific regimen for her situation is prescribing a course of action and
healing almost as much as if you prescribe medications and it requires
monitoring just like prescribing medication."

Absolutely true. And this sort of care-plan crafting is descrbied fully and
completely within the IBLCER Scope of Practice for IBCLCs. So -- YES -- we
IBCLCs can "prescribe" a course of action to a mother, after an assessment
of her lactation situation. It behooves us all to download (and read) the
Scope of Practice from the IBLCE website.

The word "prescribe" historically sets off little firecrackers for some
professions, or for individual members of some professions. I'd love to see
a YouTube video of the different reactions, if you were to yell into a
crowded room of physicians: "I'm off to assess and provide evidence-based
information to a mother, and to make adjustments to the lactation care plan
as the situation evolves" versus "I'm off to prescribe something for a
mother."
