the stage they do, or simply, for various reasons find it the most
practical thing to do."

I would agree with the practical aspect of weaning: when a woman is getting
little or no practical advice and encouragement in the hospital (which is
still unfortunately too common) or from her family, friends, and employer,
she is surrounded with social pressure to stop breastfeeding and does.  The
other part of the Business Case for Breastfeeding is that women now have
the privilege of working harder at work: having to stop and go and pump
several times a day in addition to carrying a full work load.

However, when Katherine Shealy and other researchers from the CDC asked
women "Did you breastfeeding as long as you wanted?" 60 percent of
respondents answered "No". (Characteristics of Breastfeeding Practices
among U.S. Mothers Shealy et al. 2008 Pediatrics  Vol 122
(Supplement):S50-S55)

Practical does not mean chosen or desired.
