Proving that all our children are different, I want to share with you that my
little girl, now over 4, seemed to be uninterested in the trainer/tumble cups
that were NOT spill-proof, generally batting them away. My daughter prefered
just a plain old uncovered cup or a cup & straw, though she mashed on the straw.
She still mashes on straws, biting down on them like she's "nursing" them. I
used to look at the straws from some of her formula-fed friends when we all went
to lunch together, and hers was the only one that looked all mashed up. I didn't
think she would understand why or how the spill-proof cups worked, so I delayed
until about the the first year. She took to the spill-proof cups like a duck to
water, and the only reason I can think of why is that breastfed babies expect a
delay of a couple of sucks before there is any liquid. The first few sucks
trigger let-down, so they're used to getting nothing, and then, voila, juice!

Best,
