Dear Lactnet Friends:

"I don't doubt that there are LC's out there who can do an amazing job at
calculating intake based on observation."

Actually, this has been studied. No one could correctly calculate intake
based on observation. I think one study was by Kirsten Hedberg-Nyqvist but
don't quote me. In it, experienced and skilled observers watch a video of a
baby nursing. No one could estimate how much baby had ingested.

The great fakers are babies that take in nothing at breast while looking
great. Other babies can take in 3-5 ounces in just a few minutes. We've
heard of babies who looked awful at breast and still took in a sufficient
amount.

Scales have their value. when used wisely.

warmly,
