Coming out of lurkdom for a few quick comments on placing messages in the
media to counter this coverage:

- the AAP's official policy will be difficult to counter but it can be done
with the aid of credible spokesperson/people and research (to do for this
issue what McKenna does for co-sleeping)

- the AAP has to be held accountable for communicating their policy in a way
that does not cause mothers to wean - they need pressure to communicate
pro-bf messages to counter the negative messaging - evidence will help this
argument - clippings, quotes from newspapers, tv, radio, etc.

- The strategy used when the CPCS came out with co-sleeping recommendations
can work here. The AAP risks its reputation here - I think this is
unfortunate and possibly counterproductive as we rely on the AAP's
recommendation for exclusive breastfeeding to six months and etc. Regardless
I must point out that one way to discredit a message is to discredit the
messenger. Pointing out that industry stands to benefit from this policy can
be a powerful tactic.

- the pr4bf group is in its infancy. If it were founded a couple of years
ago instead of this year and had evolved into a mature, functioning
organization, it would have been able to respond to the early warnings we
all had about this policy recommendation with a media strategy complete with
talking points, credible speakers, etc. to counter/complement the messaging
on Vitamin D supplementing.

Good luck and I'm sorry I can't help more.
