I have checked the archives on this, but am finding nothing.

In our lacatation clinic we see a lot of yeast infections and treat
them with Neman's Ointment/Gential Violet/Diflucan as indicated, but
have wondered since acidophyllus lactobacillus is sometimes used to
treat for yeast infections due to antibiotic therapy if that wouldn't be
a good idea when lactating mothers are given antibiotics during or after
delivery or later on for mastitis. I know this is for the GI tract, but
it does seem to help the whole system sometimes when used. The Pregancy
and Lactation Riskline does not recommend it due to no data from
studies.

Does anyone out there know of any studies or recommendations regarding
use of lactobacillus in lactating women? Would it help, hurt, or have
no effect on possible yeast infections of the breast or nipple. We have
to be very careful that anything we suggest is well documented.
