aren't we as LC's also accepting those risks when we allow ourselves to be
curtailed in our education of parents?
Dar Friends:
Jennifer asks a powerful question. Unfortunately, when the LC is fired,
or suspended from practice for educating completely, the risk becomes very
personal. The LC can't do anybody any good if she isn't there.
I am not justifying hiding risks to parents. However, the current medical
system in the USA does not support truth in education. Childbirth education
is used to support the status quo, which is not true education as defined by
Paolo Freire. He said that education either liberates or suppresses; as I
understand, he was run out of Brazil for teaching people to read.
Anaother aspect influencing hospital LC practice is the need to sell lots
of breastfeeding products to fund their lactation programs. One large
hospital in my area has it set up so that people that want to see the LC have to find
her in the store.
Education in most places is used as a tool for control and
misinformation. George Orwell would be roaring with laughter, I am sure at all this.
