I am a new subscriber to LACTNET. I have recently taken a new position at a
local Children's hospital to create a lactation program. I am a RN and IBCLC.
The subject has come up several times in the past week regarding diagnosing
and treating reflux in a breastfed baby. Does anyone have any experience with
diagnosing reflux with a video swallow study? It seems that the hospital had
a case a few years ago with a premie that had reflux only when bottle fed.
They diagnosed this by allowing the mother to breastfeed during the swallow
study and found that the infant did not reflux when breastfeeding. The people
that were involved got into a lot of trouble by the hospital for exposing the
mother to the radiation. Has anyone ever done this? Is there any other way to
see if the infant is refluxing when at breast? Any information would be
greatly appreciated.
Chris Smith, RN, IBCLC
