A friend of mine had recurrent plugged ducts and mastitis, which she had
been attempting to lessen with lecithin, low-sodium diet -- the whole
works. After this went on for (literally) years with two different
babies, she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. When that was treated,
her ducts stopped getting plugged.

I realize this is purely anecdotal. And as I'm from the "softer" side of
lactation, I won't even attempt to speculate on the science involved or
if there is even a connection.
