" Just like any invention can be used for good and
bad, just as email can be used for getting out useful information and also
for receiving spam, the term "evidence based medicine" is being used in
sinister ways, to pommel the opposition into submission. The pommelers
frequently are defending the status quo, in the case of breastfeeding as one
example, often based on no evidence at all (clinical or experimental), and
demanding that those who question them provide evidence."

I agree, this just happened to me last week. Had a pediatrician on a rant
because the baby had a tight frenulum we felt should have been clipped, and
she claimed that practice was "outmoded." When I disagreed, she told me
that the AAP had a position statement about this. Is that true? I don't
know; but she was using it to "pommel" me and intimidate me. She didn't
come up with any "evidence," but I can tell you what I have been doing in my
spare time.
