I have also seen several complications with epidurals. i remember working in
the delivery room many years ago, the mom was given an epidural and instead of
going down to her legs it went up her body. we were hitting her chest and
she didn't feel it, it was very scary. they did an emergency c/section, mom/baby
were fine.
another case was a mom i saw as a visiting nurse. she had permanant nerve
damage in her leg from the epidural. to add insult to the situation, the doctor
kept telling her in was in her head. he had her stop breastfeeding so he could
give her psychotropic medications. it wasn't until they finally sent her to a
neurologist that they realized it was NOT in her head.
scary stuff and most women here on long island can't wait to get their
epidurals. some hospitals have 85% epidural rates. it frustrates me that Lamaze
International, ICEA, all the childbirth organizations, don't address this epidural
epidemic.
