I have also made a point of telling health care professionals and others
about my children's backgrounds. I have worked with several child welfare
(child protection) agencies, and would often talk about my children being
breastfed until they were almost five, sleeping with me, etc. My children,
as they became teenagers, were active volunteers (helping at agency events
and assisting with foster children) and popular with all the agency staff,
so this helped to develop positive feelings about long-term breastfeeding
and co-sleeping. I am convinced that this made a difference when they
encountered cases that involved breastfeeding and co-sleeping - they no
longer saw them as "abnormal." Heck, Teresa did it, and her kids are okay.
