Terri's case of a baby who is refluxing and reacting more on one breast than
the other reminds me of the case cited in an issue of JHL in the early 90's,
I believe, where the baby was found to have laryngomalacia predominantly on
one side of the esophagus. Has this mom tried holding the baby differently
on the side it has trouble with than the side it doesn't. What I mean is,
if the baby is in cradle hold on the "good" side, try it in clutch or
football hold on the "difficult" side. This will keep the same side of the
baby on top (presuming baby's lying on it's side at the breast) and may give
you a bit more information about the source of the problem. It sounds
mechanical, meaning it's something about that particular position of the
baby and the anatomy related to that position, or that particular breast.
Spitting up, gassiness and fussiness all sound like reflux. You don't
mention how old the baby is or what weight gain is like if the baby is more
than a few days old. Those are some other factors we need to know.
