Linda, you wrote,

"Yes, it is a double-edged sword. Each of these components will be too
expensive though -- multiple bm ingredients will not be found in formulas.
Formulas dropped their "immune-protecting" nucleotides when they began
adding "brain protecting" DHA. Only one expensive formula that I've seen
has both, (and even many well-to-do parents don't seem to think it's worth
the extra money). The new ingredients are used as new big marketing angles,
while not mentioning that the last ingredient that was so important is now
dropped. The cost of a formula that has many bm components would be
forboding -- would likely be classified as a "medicine." That's a good
thing, I think."

I have looked at infant formula ingredients lists and so far Nestle, Wyeth,
and Mead Johnson have both DHA/AA and nucleotides. Formulas in Japan also have
lactoferrin in them. So I have to disagree with you, unless I misunderstand
what you are saying. Or unless the infant formula ingredient lists are
incorrect.

With the advancement of techniques to filter human proteins from cloned cow's
milk and the growth of transgenic cow herds, I think we will see many added
human milk components place into infant formulas. These components are also
being used in the pharmaceutical industry.

There is a mouthwash on the market--Biotene, it has lactoferrin in it.
Hm...cavity fighting...based on what human lactoferrin can do. We all too often
hear that toddlers shouldn't breastfeed at night because of the risk of cavities.
Of course we now have this wonderful mouthwash (also a toothpaste) to use
instead of nighttime nursing.......Kinda like hiv/aids--can't breastfeed but we
have products on the market with lactoferrin that will treat and inactivate
that virus. It goes on and on and on.......that's called human milk research
and how we make money....
