Dear Catherine,
That is the worst of it, when problems are not caught
promptly and the children are suffering!

Your recent post about the children with B-12
deficiency that went undiagnosed reminds me of an
article I read about 2-3 years ago that discussed the
development of rickets. One child, I believe still
under one year of age, had been getting rice milk
after being weaned from the breast. The baby developed
rickets. The disease advanced to the point that, not
only were the child's legs severely bowed, he had also
developed a "rachitic rosary" (when the tips of the
ribs begin to bow outward under the skin overlying the
ribcage). The parents brought him to the ped for
evaluation because he had stopped trying to stand and
walk. I can't even begin to imagine how lousy this
poor little guy must have been feeling!! The
photographs accompanying the article were painful to
look at.

Education! Education! Education!
Carole
