I like to reinforce to parents the importance of baby being fed.....visitors
can go to the cafeteria, buy a gift, take Dad out for a cup of coffee?
Reinforce ownership of their baby's well-being. If visitors are present I
kindly make a comment that if they can wind down their visit in the next 10
minutes I will return so that baby can practice feeding again. I don't
remember having any problems with visitors understanding this. I also will
ask Mom if she minds her visitors presence during a feeding that I may be
helping with...this is a cue for all present. There are times when I am
surprised that they really don't mind if even Grandpa or Brother (mom's
sibling) are there. We make a point in our class and while on PP that the
first few days are very important for Mom, Dad and Baby to get
acquainted.....everyone else can wait and they do have the option of saying
when visitors can come and go.
