Ayelet,

You just never know how much parents hear and assimilate. We are
responsible for the teaching, but the actual learning is on their shoulders.

I had clients a few weeks ago who had somebody arranged who could do
postnatal CST, had planned a homebirth, great plans for parenting. I saw
them several times in the first week of life, and for whatever reason mom
couldn't hear me telling her she needed to pump if baby couldn't latch, and
that they really needed to supp baby. I don't want to give too many
details, but on the second home visit, they weren't hearing me, and I
finally sat down and declared that I would not be leaving their home until
somebody fed the baby something; I didn't care what or how, but this baby
was starving and someone had to deal with it RIGHT NOW.

I have no idea how they could have not noticed how little the baby was
getting, but I do know that an hcp relative told them that baby was just
quiet and sleepy because he was content.

You did what you could as soon as you became aware of the situation, and it
sure sounds like you managed to have a substantive conversation without
freaking out or embarrassing the mother, which is no small thing when a baby
looks like that!

All the best,
Lynn, LLL MO
