I think the concept that you need ten thousand hours of experience to be an 
expert makes a lot of sense, and, to me, breastfeeding your own baby makes a 
significant contribution to that. I've breastfed four children over twelve 
years and couldn't count the number of hours that would add up to. No, it's 
not quite the same as helping other mothers but you learn a huge amount by 
just doing it for that length of time - how breastfeeding looks, feels, 
works. You learn even more by attending groups of breastfeeding mothers even 
if you aren't actively helping them, just by observing what they do 
differently, what works and doesn't, hearing about how they fit 
breastfeeding into their lives, etc.
