Lactnuts,
Help, please, from your combined experiences. Although I have 9 years as
an LLL leader, I am new to the IBCLC, having earned it with the 1997
exam. My concern is about "prescribing"...I obviously don't have the
legal authority to recommend meds, even OTC meds. I also don't have the
experience or knowledge base, yet, to fully discuss herbal remedies, etc.
with a client. However, I see in posts that an LC recommends a
particular med, whether prescription on OTC. I assume that when you make
such a recommendation, you have the knowledge base and experience to do
so. How do you handle this when it is a med? Do you work with a ped,
ob, or CNM to do the prescribing? Also, does anyone ever recommend OTC
meds (although, I'm not sure under what circumstances...). I'm concerned
primarily about the moms and babies I talk to, and also about liability
(once a lawyer, always a lawyer...). There are times when I really
believe that a mom should be taking or refraining from taking a med ,
herbal prep, etc, but I don't want to cross a line that is beyond my
scope of practice. In those cases, I've suggested the mom discuss it
with the appropriate health care provider, or refer to an LC with more
experience, whichever is appropriate. Thoughts, suggestions?
Thanks...Lee-Ann, RN, BSN, LLLL, IBCLC
