Hi, all:

I am working with a mom whose baby has been in a NICU since birth - she is 14 months old, and heading toward discharge with a trach in place, and lots of digestive issues, including short bowel. This mom has been dedicated to providing breast milk since four months when the baby was able to take milk feeds (hers and donor), and had planned to try to achieve 1000 days of breast milk for her baby. The baby's surgeons are pushing for formula now that the baby is over a year old. Her sodium and zinc levels are at the low end of normal, and she tends toward anemia from the short bowel issues. Mom is concerned about rocking the boat so close to a long-awaited discharge, and really feels compelled to continue with breast milk. She has been a strong and vocal advocate for her baby since birth, and is looking for studies, research, or statistics that support her intuition. I'm coming up short. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Peggy
