Hi wise ones,
    Had this mother call me very upset tonight.  P4 G3 mom of a 3 month old;
she reports no issues with supply or baby's nursing with the exception of
baby recently beginning to sleep through the night. Mom recently had a
copper IUD put in and reports a negative pregnancy test 2 days ago. She
reports breasts feeling less full and pumping less than an ounce today,
where she normally gets 4-5 oz. She said baby was fussy after nursing this
morning, but output in diapers has been fine, she just suddenly has no
response to pump and baby within one feed is not satisfied as of this
morning. Baby had a bit of slow growth initally, we worked on latch and
position and she improved nicely. Mom is stunned at the sudden change. She
reports breasts are sore and feel like there is milk that needs to come out,
but no leaking and no fullness.
This is the third time this sudden shift has happened; both of the prior
times mom discovered she was pregnant. She denies any new diet changes or
meds, with the exception of the copper IUD. Absent a new pregnancy, my
thought is that maybe her cycle is returning with baby sleeping through the
night and feeding Q 4 hours during the day, which seems infrequent to me at
3 months old.
Her plan at this point is to nurse as often as possible, pump Q 2-3
hours, take fenugreek and blessed thistle tinctures, and stay well fed and
hydrated herself, but we are both a bit stumped by this happening again,
unless there IS a new pregnancy as happened the last two times. Any ideas
would be greatly appreciated, as she really does not want to resort to
artificial milk. Thanks so much!!!
