Dear all, and especially my colleagues in NY State.

I just discovered a law on the books in NY State - apparently unique among the 50 states that states
that formula discharge packs cannot be given to a woman without a prescription from her
pediatrician or the request of the woman. So, I'm wondering why all women I see (and including
myself) are given these packs even when they don't ask for them. I'm writing a letter to the hospital
where I delivered about how annoyed I am that they gave me that formula pack. I KNOW my
pediatrician didn't order it.

For those of you in hospitals, you now have some ammunition to change your policies since handing
these out without a prescription or the mother's request is in violation of the law. The other totally
unique law in New York is a law that states "a nursing baby of less than one year old may accompany
its mother in jalil rovided that the medical officer of the correctional institution deems her physically
fit to care for the child." And I received a call last week from someone working at Riker's Island who
is trying to work on this very issue. She's having a bit of a struggle adjusting from the Canadian
policies (where she is from) to our far less cohesive policies here in the US.

Best, Susan Burger
