The address in the subject line came through my email this afternoon. It is
promoted as a forum for both parents and health professionals. I did a
search for breastfeeding, my usual starting point for whether a site is
worthwhile. Both of the following excerpts were under the Q&A section. I
have a real problem with the assumption that 22 months and two and a half
years are appropriate weaning times, and suggesting a BOTTLE as a substitute
for breastfeeding!
I know I am preaching to the choir here, but it seems that we must make an
effort to communicate that breastfeeding for two or MORE years is normal. I
have discovered that when women ask me about weaning, they are often looking
for support to continue nursing, but do not feel comfortable. It is more
acceptable to discuss weaning than breastfeeding.
I will not offer this website as a resource for my internet savvy parents.

I have tried everything short of running away from home at nights to wean
my two ½ year old from the breast. Do you have any suggestions?

Yes, we do have a suggestion for you: If you run away, don't take him with
you!
Seriously, it sounds as if you are a bit too compliant with your child's
demands. Why shouldn't a child enjoy cuddling and suckling at mothers'
breast? However, depending on the standards in your community, a 2 ½ yr. old
is probably too mature to be nursing. If you wish, initiate a plan for its
termination.

We suggest giving him a warm milk bottle while he is lying on your lap - no
breast - and then after several successful attempts with that, gently move
him from your lap to his bed with the warm bottle. If he objects be gentle,
reassuring and firm. If the problem persists, seek advice from your own
pediatrician, who knows your child, and has probably handled similar
situations frequently.

I am asking for advice on weaning my son who is 22 months old from the
breast. My husband and I have been trying without much luck. I wondering if
there is something else besides cold turkey. Please help?

Ideally the decision to wean, is a decision made by both you and your baby,
and not the expectations of others. You are the only one that really knows
why you are planning to wean. Although most people would agree that at 22
months it is time to wean.
