Hello, again, Lyla.
I've had another thought about that ear tag. Sometimes hemifacial
microsomia is part of a larger syndrome called Goldenhar's (might be spelled
Goldenhaar's, I'm not sure) Syndrome, if the ear tag is on the left side of the
face. When it's the left side that is smaller, there is sometimes cardiac
involvement as well. A cardiac problem could definitely cause the baby not to have
the energy to effectively get the milk from the breast. And cardiac problems
are not always caught when the baby is born. I myself and other LCs have
come across babies after hospital release who we've immediately referred back to
the doctor because they didn't look right, who turned out to have heart
problems. So if the ear tag is on the left side, this is another condition to rule
out.
