Follow up is part of an IBCLCs Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
Unfortunately, I think many of our standards are fairly vague and allow
lots of lee-way. This is why we have some IBCLCs doing test weights,
some doing HCPs, some doing follow up, and some doing none of this.

Personally, I always do at least one follow up phone call after a
consultation. Many times more, depends on the situation and the mother.
I do not follow up forever until mom comes off the shield. At some
point, she is on her own and she is welcome to call me back. But I don't
use NS all that often (I do use them sometimes). It depends on the
problems and if my test weights show the NS is the answer and increases
intake.
