I want to thank those that posted about alcoholism in breastfeeding mothers.
I especially appreciated the insight that Kirsten McLean has on this
subject. If this wasn't such a taboo issue more would go for treatment and
there is the problem that when the mother is the only caregiver without
family support she doesn't feel she has any reliable long term placement for
the children.

No one has mentioned this so for those of you who are older enough to
remember or hear of the days when IV alcohol was used to stop preterm labor.
It interferes with oxytocin release. (The hangover wasn't a pretty sight I
was told.) I do believe that there is a "safeguard" in the breastfeeding
mother who drinks to much as well and that the baby is perhaps protected. I
would appreciate hearing if anyone can point me to studies regarding the
long term health effects on children of breastfeeding mothers besides
emotional.
Thanks, Mary Ann Krainz RN, IBCLC
