"Next time, anyone tries to keep me from having a pump in the house
beforehand..." I do believe that everyone's experience of breastfeeding
is different. What one mother may have to have or feel she has to have
will be different. We are remarkable and varied species--body and soul.
For many of us, the decision to become an LC is a part of our personal
experience of breastfeeding. Many of us, including myself, have a
tendency to view our personal experience as "the reality." It has taken
me a number of years and working with some wonderful mothers who have
opened my eyes to "their reality." It hasn't in many cases changed my
own beliefs but given me(I hope) an understanding of the many ways women
make breastfeeding work for them. I still stand by my statement that
engorgement is not normal. I believe that the book, Breastfeeding and
Human Lactation by Riordan & Auerbach, first and second edition discuss
engorgement at length discussing the difference between breast fullness
and breast engorgement. "Breast engorgement, by contrast, is often the
consequence of mismanagement of the normal state ot transient breast
fullness caused by the delay or restriction in duration and frequency of
breastfeeding." Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
