The VIt D issue started here in North Carolina a few years ago with some
reported cases which seemed to be centered in one large teaching hospital. I
seem to recall when I looked up the original study that the majority of the
babies that had been reported to have rickets also had been referred to this
hospital for failure to thrive and/or slow weight gain. So we need to
carefully look at these cases because the rickets may be due to a "lack of
breastfeeding". I would think if the babies were FTT then they were not
getting the amount of Vit D necessary for bone growth, nor were they getting
other essential nutrients.
Maybe someone can help me look up those orignial studies and see if my memory
is correct.
As Dr Jack is famous for saying "Once again breastfeeding is sacrificed on
the altar of ignorance".

here last week at our Breastfeeding Trends Conference)
