You may remember my plea for suggestions to get an infant from bottle to
breast. This is a mom whom I have posted about several times since I began
working with her in April.

To capsulize the case:

Baby was induced and was born at 5#10oz. He gained well for 2-3 weeks, then
mom got too busy, didn't feed him often enough and he lost weight. Her milk
supply decreased rapidly. His suck was weak and he was put on formula along
with pumped breastmilk.

Mom set about increasing her milk supply and did so--herbs and pumping, but
baby's suck was still not efficient. Pre and post weighing indicated low
intake at the breast.

He was fed with bottle, then nipple shield when her milk supply was
adequate, SNS at breast and on finger, and finally cup and breast
exclusively. That was a good final step. He had adequate intake while
strengthening his suck at the breast.

This was a long, difficult case including tough conversations with parents,
Cranial/Sacral treatments, 2 months rental of the baby-weigh scale, a lot
of extended family objections, and a harried LC.

Today I called the mother and all is well. Baby is feeding at the breast
exclusively and is being taken in weekly to the doctor for weight checks.
He is happy and healthy. And I hope the family can relax and let him grow
up naturally.

Whew!!

Thank you all for your replies to my requests for suggestions and your
opinions on the case as it developed.
