Julie T. asked about dads doing skin-to-skin with newborns, and Denise B. responded. I have come across a couple of situations where the mother was unable to respond to the baby, e.g. rushed back to the operating theatre or other emergency, and the midwives encouraged the father to be skin-to-skin with the baby. Did the dads love this - yes, they did! There was research in Sweden in the late-1990s on skin-to-skin with dads, and their oxytocin level (up). but I don't have a reference to cite. It is always good to replicate studies like this in other sites Anyone doing it?

I'm going Lactnet "nomail" right now. So any replies, please send privately.

We have dads who do skin to skin and our staff will initiate it with dad during the power hour, if mom is unable due to medical complications. We have it written into our lactation policy. They love it. We also use it with both parents in the nicu when our babies kangaroo. I think studying the bonding affects of s2s on dads would be a interesting study.
