Dear Lactnet Friends:

Pat wonders about the need for 2-gram accurate scales outside of a NICU.

Such a scale is a helpful tool in private practice for specific situations.
For example, the mother who doubts that her baby is "getting enough." Or
weight gain/supply issues.

Sometimes the mother of a premature infant discharged to home has trouble
trusting exclusive breastfeeding after months of pumping, weighing and
counting numbers.

I'll never forget the mama of a 28-weeker who had been discharged to
home. Baby was now strong. She was afraid that something would happen to
her baby, because she had gone through months of scary times in NICU. She
rented a scale and did one pre/post feed weight a day, until that fateful
morning when she called to say that her baby had taken in 5 ounces in the
morning feed. She was shocked and happy; the scale was helpful to build her
confidence.

warmly,
