Hi Lactnetters! I was offered the opportunity to bring my baby to
work with me when I was working as a high school guidance counselor at an
all-girls Catholic school. My Principal was actually figuring out how they
would all take turns holding the baby for me. I appreciated being given this
opportunity but luckily we could afford for me to stay at home with the baby.
This group of nuns certainly knew how to empower women to have choices.
I also volunteer at our WIC office where my nursing babies have
always gone with me. If they weren't allowed, I also would not be there.
The office manager there was even able to bring her nursing baby with her
while she continued to work until her baby was 6 months old, then the Mom
left to be at home. These live nursing babies were even better than a
poster! We showed many clients how nursing could be done discreetly, easily
and and met our babies needs while answering the phone, filing, giving a
class or talking to a Mom individually.
Cathy Bargar, RN, IBCLC Ithaca NY said it so well, "Lactation
consulting is a woman's field. It's *womanly* by nature, and it's
intimate. And yes, it does involve babies and breasts - if it weren't for
babies and breasts, we wouldn't have a lot to talk about professionally. And
yes, it's scientific and researched-based and all that important stuff."
Thank you for your quote, this is something I was trying to say at one of our
local BF Network meetings recently, but my opinion was certainly the minority
!!
