Today, when I arrived at work, there was a colorful gift bag on my desk.
(Graphics included bottles and pacifiers...have you guessed?) Inside I
found a copy of the AAP's "New Mother's Guide to Breastfeeding" bearing the
Ross logo on the cover -- and a box of formula samples. The nurse manager
for our Pediatrics office left me a note saying she wanted my opinion on
the book, and added "The rep said that Ross will only provide this book to
us if we also give out the gift bag with formula samples." I gave her my
opinion (!), along with a copy of the 12/20/2000 AAP Section on
Breastfeeding letter on this topic.

I am hoping the pediatricians vote not to take this offer. They recently
had a marvelous dinner out with the rep to discuss Lipil (which is now
inhabiting our formula samples cabinet...) The economy makes choosing the
high road difficult, IMO. My clinic hours have been cut 50% (now I only
work 12 hours a week -- anyone have a job for a mature LC without RN??) and
the departmental budgets are pared to the bone. Ross knows when to step in
and "help" and, as they say, timing is everything...

Discouraged and underemployed...
Margery Wilson, IBCLC
