I worked as a hospital LC 86-91. When I first started, I saw every
lactating mom. As the staff learned (via example and inservice) my job
evolved. I began to teach a daily BF class to all lactating moms and seeing
problem moms only. The best thing was when I'd come in and a nurse would
tell me "mom had this problem and I told her x,y & z. Was that right?"
Then the staff progressed to "mom had a problem and I helped her and it's OK
now." It's a process and as hospital LCs we need to be working on
empowering the staff nurses, not doing it for them :-) Sincerely, Pat in
SNJ
