I am a LLL Leader and was trying to help a friend who had a difficult birth and
breastfeeding experience in another state. I talked to her on the phone daily
after the birth and everything I suggested she said the LC suggested. But
she was sending the baby to the nursery at night for a 3-4 hour stretch. For
some reason they were not telling her that she needed to nurse 10-12 times a
day. I thought they had breastfeeding logs. I don't know, never had a
hospital birth.

Yesterday she told me that she saw a new lactation consultant at the
hospital. Baby is 6 days old.

The LC told her to express some breast milk on her nipple to entice baby to
nurse. If that doesn't work, use a little Karo syrup.

I was horrified at the thought. I looked online last night and the only
reference I could find was for getting kittens to take a bottle.

Does she need a new LC or is this suggestion harmless?
