Hello Gonneke van Veldhuizen-Staas & Netters,

I know I stated " If anything would ever happen to a baby/mother with
using a product other than what it was meant for, you would go to court
with no leg to stand on." Then Gonneke, you stated "Again I would like
to point out that there are non-USA LCs and that they do not have to be
terrified to be dragged into court for any mistake they make.<"
First of all, I apologize. I meant to say IF you go to court, not you
would go to court. Second, I apologize because I was mostly referring to
the US. My mind forgets sometimes (many times) that WE are
International!!! I have traveled alot to other countries and envy you in
not having to deal so much with law suits and threats of law suits. We do
get crazy here, but unfortunately, that is the reality and we here in the
States need to deal with it professionally and realistically. I mostly
stuck my head out here on Lactnet, because one of my jobs is to folllowup
on complaints, potential suits, etc. I have to say, I am seeing more
problems and complaints from lactating mothers than I have in the past
years. You, as LCs, might be explaining the correct procedures to the
moms, but it is what the mom then interprets and does that can become a
problem. I can tell you some real horror stories what these mother's are
doing and then saying such as "The lactation consultant told me to do
that." or "That is what the hospital people said" or "The LC said she/he
could not see me right away." This is only FYI to you all. Make sure you
educate, demonstrate, and document all you do. Better be safe than sorry.
