Our hospital has a copy of Briggs, Freeman, and Yaffee on a shelf in the
nursery. I have my copy of Hale. The peds and OBs are aware of these
resources. Some of the docs ask me for information when they order meds for
mom. However, there are times when moms are told to either pump and dump or
(horrors) to stop breastfeeding.

One of the peds says that you can never know what will happen. One mom was
receiving antibiotics (Gentamycin, Clindamycin, Ampicillin) for postpartum
temperature elevation. I told him that Briggs mentioned rare GI bleeding from
the Clindamycin. He said that he may be sued if the child has any hearing
problems in 20 years (referring to Gentamycin). He is one of the docs that
calls for us to look up meds. He's really interested in information. I called
Poison Control for more information and relayed the information to him.
However, once he had said "No", he didn't change his recommendation.

Denise, I'd just keep talking to the docs. Change is a really interesting
concept. Your idea of letting him know what information the mother knows is
good. Some mothers realize that they can make an informed decision, and
respect the areas of strength in their doctors. In other words, they don't
tell the pediatrician everything.
