Dear Tammy;
We see a lot of moms in our hospital who have either a sick baby not feeding
or a pre baby not transferring well. We feel it is of the utmost importance
to keep supply up or in somewhat over supply so that the weak baby does not
need to put a lot of effort in to feeding while it is compromised.

We try to have the mom pump with a double pump for a minimum of 6 times/24
hrs, usually after each feed or when feeding should have taken place.

We make out a feeding/pumping plan that is not too tiring for mom. Usually
if babies are really small or weak, we suggest feeding for only 15 minutes
one side, than top up by cup or whatever is appropriate for that baby, than
pump for 15 minutes or a minute or 2 after if she is in the middle of
another letdown. The whole process should not take more than an hour,
usually less so that there is lots of cuddle time if mom is able and baby
well enough. We don't suggest single pumps in these situations.

 WE try to get social services involved if there is a money problem with a
rental of a good pump when they go home
