I have a mom with a 2 week old who has developed shingles. Ped told her she could bf as long as there were no lesions on her breast. Today she called me because she thinks she is getting a rash on her areolas and is afraid to put the baby to breast. My questions are:
Should this mom have the baby feed at breast, and
if she shouldn't nurse, can she feed the milk expressed if the rash is on her nipples?
My insticts tell me that it is more important now for the baby to receive her milk but if there is a rash on her nipples I want to make sure it is safe.

Thanks, Claudia Globerger RN/IBCLC
