We have discussed this before, but here goes.

First, I would never accept depo provera at this point if I were the mother.
I would go on a progesterone only pill for a month.  If the milk supply
doesn't drop, she can get the shot after a month.  If the milk supply drops,
the mother can stop the pill.  You can't stop depo provera.

But, does she really need this for birth control.  Breastfeeding is a good
method of child spacing, under the conditions mentioned n times on lactnet.
Further protection?  Okay, if she must, but does it have to be hormonal.
There are many other options available, which might be just as acceptable to
the couple.
