Personally, I'm pretty shocked at the nurses response to this. I've been a
NICU nurse for more years than I've been an IBCLC. It's because I was NICU
that the benefits of human milk became so obvious ( before any fancy smacy
research "validated" what I saw clinically) and motivated me to get my IBCLC.
I'm back in the NICU- a military one with fairly exposed areas. Many of my
co- workers are men. They have no problem with it or actively helping moms
with nursing the babe and handle this as calmly and naturally as they do the
mom who "oops" and leak blood all over chairs and floors.
We have tons of daddy's visiting. and hospital personal ( male and female)
in and out. Some of our mom's prefer to use the privacy screens....some
don't. If another FAMILY is uncomfortable with another moms "exposure" while
feeding, we offer to provide a screen for that family- most of the time our
families have bonded through this tough time and we can have a couple of
moms "exposed" and pumping at the bedside while they chat with each other.
If the nursing or pumping mom is comfortable and doesn't want to be shut
off... no big deal. We do also have a "private" room just outside the unit
with 4 pumps in it for our moms and hospital staff, etc. to use if they need.
Every once in a while we get a new nurse who might make a comment, but our
environment is accepting and "open" and they learn quickly- get over it.
Our main focus is the babies and families.. getting them healthy and home. A
NICU nurse that has to be so judgmental and controlling doesn't stay long in
our unit and IMO doesn't have a place in any family centered care area.
I was really shocked at how angry/ shocked I got with this topic. I
apologize as a NICU nurse that others in my field would even be so narrow
minded and apologize as a nurse that we still have prudes among our ranks.
D#mn- no wonder women are taught to be ashamed of nursing in public if this
is the response they get from medical professionals.
