Dear Lactnet Friends:

Although putting a dynamic living relationship into a qualitative format
has its limits.

For one thing, human milk's caloric content is always changing. I've seen
a range of 16 to 50 calories/ounce. A mother I worked with made 21 calorie/
ounce milk in the morning, and 39 calorie/ounce milk in the evening; she
was pumping for her baby who was in the NICU, and having each milk sample
analyzed.

For another thing, we all take sips of water or a piece of fruit or a
cookie along with our daily meals. Sometimes we have a feast day meal,
where we eat non-stop for several hours (like a restaurant meal or a
party). . . . babies have all those patterns too.

Assuming human milk's caloric content is the same as that of formula is
bass-ackwards.

warmly,
