Has anyone had a client whose baby made a constant clicking sound while at the breast - baby is 2 weeks old and has thrush on his tongue, so I am wondering if this could be the cause. Mom says that she was put on antibiotics right after delivery, and within 2 days the clicking started, and has never stopped. Would the thrush possibly cause an itchy palate?

This baby also tends to lose suction easily while non-nutritively nursing. Baby is gaining weight by leaps and bounds so that is not an issue.(17 ounces in 5 days!!). We are working on her overactive letdown reflex, and showed her how to do suck training at home. (finger assessment reveals that baby's tongue wants to keep retracting back somewhat while sucking).

This mom is concerned that the loud clicking will lead to her inablility to nurse long term. I reassured her that this is unlikely. I hope I'm right.

Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
