Here in UK we are that much closer to the former Yugoslavia, and many people
have taken trucks of aid over, often at great personal risk. As regards
breastfeeding, the rate has gone up to (I think) around 70%. Before the
conflict, it was low. UNICEF and WHO have done a lot to promote and support
breastfeeding, and as example, I know that Chloe Fisher (I presume she is known
in US?) has been over to help with education.

There have been problems with artificial milks being donated, both by
individuals and the artificial milk industry, and sent out in 'baby boxes'. In
one notorious case last year, a charity made an appeal for donations on
television which gave the impression that breastfeeding was part and parcel of
the poor health and conditions afflicting the Bosnian people. If I remember
correctly, they had the temerity to show happy mothers and babies when bottles
were available, while all had been doom and gloom for the breastfeeding mother
shown. Happily pressure from individuals and Baby Milk Action (part of INFACT?)
succeeded in persuading them to change the appeal.

UNICEF supplies 'necessary' artificial milk, with no brand name, in line with
WHO code.

Of course the situation changes, and I don't know what the up to date position
is. I hope this has been of interest to you all.

Baby Milk Action make available a paper 'Infant Feeding in Emergencies' by
Marion Kelly. I believe it was originally published in 'Disasters' Vol 17 No 2.
